Learn 2 Ride Your Bike

CYCLE TRAINING – Learning Stages

Our Learn2Ride programme is aimed at cyclists who have already mastered balancing on a bike, ideally on a balance bike or bike with stabilisers. If the Cyclist is not at this level we suggest a 1:1 course before joining this programme.

This programme will cover the following with the aim to provide the rider with confidence to ensure their cycle is roadworthy and the ability to confidently ride on minor roads, identify priorities, provide clear signals, understand road markings and deal with hazards when required.

All Cyclists will be required to bring and wear a helmet and hi-vis jacket which must be worn during training. We are unable to provide training to anyone that doesn’t. Knee and Elbow pads are optional and gloves highly recommended. Suitable items are available to be purchased at The Cycling Hub but please don’t leave this until the last minute.

Stage 1 – Understanding the bike – will take approximately one hour.

  • Safety Checks to ensure that the bike is safe to ride.
  • How to brake with control
  • How to use gears properly.
  • Getting on and off the bike
  • Setting off safely and stopping

Once the instructor is confident the rider has understood and is competent at Stage 1 they will move on to Stage 2.

Stage 2 – Controlling the bike, signals,  and understanding roads – this will take approximately 1-2 hours depending on the rider’s abilities.

  • Turning left and right at fast and slow speeds
  • Cycling with one hand
  • Observation
  • Use of signals
  • Understanding road junctions and roundabouts
  • Understanding priorities

Once the instructor is confident the rider has understood and is competent at Stage 2 they will move on to Stage 3.

Stage 3 – Putting it all together – cycling on the road. This will take approximately 1-1.5 hours depending on the rider’s abilities.

  • Turning into and out of a live junction
  • Roundabouts
  • Taking an instructor led ride on the road.

If the instructor is confident that the rider is competent, they will receive a certificate of participation and a review of their achievements.

Your Instructor Graham Wakley

Graham is friendly, approachable, and a firm believer in the many good things exercise does for both body and mind. He’s passionate about passing this on to the next generation of cyclists, helping them build the road sense and awareness they need to ride confidently, calmly, and safely—without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

A regular cyclist and runner, Graham has logged thousands of miles under his feet and tyres, riding both solo and in groups. He has coached Couch to 5K programmes, is a qualified walk leader, a qualified first aider, and brings plenty of hands-on bike maintenance experience too. He delivers every session with enthusiasm, patience, and a healthy dose of humour, firmly believing that people learn best when they feel supported, encouraged… and occasionally groan at one of his terrible jokes.
